Book Discussion: The Babysitter

Image
For this month's book discussion we read a personal favorite and semi-classic Young Adult novel by R.L. Stine, The Babysitter. We discuss the urban legend and it's many variations along with the countless movies that play on this theme as well as the real life 1950 true crime of Janett Christman. Listen to the episode as we get personal and talk about what makes up stay up at night, our own babysitting stories, disturbing phone calls we've actually experienced and discussing the book at length. As always, here are a few links we referenced in the episodes.  Point Thriller Fear Street  Clown Dolls and Other Variations, No Thanks If you read The Babysitter and want to find something a little bit better, Gina recommended Barry Lyga's I Hunt Killers . Next up, we'll be reading and discussing Stephen King's The Mist . Find us on iTunes , Google Play , Stitcher and now TuneIn ! See you in the stacks!

Alone in Deep Space, he discovers a possibly imaginary giant alien spider with whom he has many philosophical conversations but will this new companionship be enough to get him home safely? Read it to find out!

Probably not the best book to be reading at lunch, but it's still pretty good so far! What are you reading today?

Short Story Collections

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson   Given that this  story  is only ten pages and was written in the forties (and written by a woman), it certainly gives a lasting impression. Think  Leave It To Beaver  meets  The Hunger Games  meets  The Stoning of Soraya M . It's horrifying, you'll be screaming at the book by the end.

Happy Friday! For today's book of the day check out Bonita Avenue by Peter Buwalda. Siem and his family are well liked and he has a promising future in politics. But when elements of his past threaten to come about, things begin to fall apart. Check out this explosive debut "about relationships torn asunder by lies, and minds destroyed by madness."

Book Discussion: Wrinkle in Time

Image
The library ladies finally made time in their busy schedules to meet up and discuss a Wrinkle in Time , so make sure to check your device for the latest episode. We're really excited to share our thoughts, ranting and semi-on-point tangents about this book and the author. Since Jade read the original text and Gina listened to it, I decided to read the graphic novel so we could bring a few different perspectives into our discussion. With references to The Wizard of Oz and a crush Sarah won't let go of who starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie of A Ring of Endless Light (this story takes place within the same world as A Wrinkle in Time) Like we promised we have a few links for you to enjoy. Almost Famous Women by Megan Mayhew Bergman is a really interesting collection of short stories based on real women. Most of whom Jade had never even heard of! Don't expect happy endings in these tales but expect to find strong-willed and vivacious women.  Further reading! Book Discussion: Eleven Hours

Image
Hi there! Sorry we've been a bit behind on posting for the blog! We have finally had a chance to sit down and make a plan for things so we promise to be better about getting content up. For our second episode, we discussed Eleven Hours  by Pamela Erens. The title refers to the time span that readers spend with the two main characters, Lore and Franckline, as Lore goes through labor. Lore arrives alone at the hospital and Franckline is her nurse; both are pregnant. During these eleven hours, they each try to come to terms with their pasts that make them uneasy about bringing a child into their worlds. It's a very raw read but a rather interesting read! See you in the stacks!
